Disconnect to Reconnect
With What Matters Most

A Statewide Partnership to Help Kids Thrive Beyond Screens

South Carolina Families Are Choosing Real Life

And This Summer, Yours Can, Too.

This summer, the South Carolina Department of Education and ScreenStrong are joining forces to do something bold: help families across our state step away from the screens and toward the connections and reclaim the moments that make a healthy childhood.

The research is clear. Kids don’t grow into confident, creative, connected people through a screen. They get there through friendships, adventures, family traditions, real conversations, and the kind of unscripted experiences that no app can replicate.

And as America turns 250, there’s never been a better moment to return to what’s always worked: outdoor play, time together, and a childhood defined by living, not scrolling.

“Not long ago, we thought smoking was harmless, too. Today, science is warning us that excessive screen time is negatively changing childhood itself. But families have the power to change course.”

–Ellen Weaver

A Screen-Free Summer
Is Possible—And Easier
Than You Might Think

Here are 9 ideas to help you unplug, reconnect, and make lasting memories this summer.

A Statewide Shift Is Underway

This summer builds on the work already being done across the state, where:

  • Schools are exploring healthier phone-free learning environments
  • Teachers are receiving training on healthy screen habits and student well-being
  • Students are learning brain science and healthy technology habits
  • Families are being encouraged to reconnect through screen-free activities and stronger family routines

When these things happen, research shows kids benefit from:

✔ Stronger friendships

✔ Better focus and emotional health

✔ More confidence and independence

✔ Healthier habits for life

✔ More real-world experiences and memories

Why It Matters

Today’s kids are spending more time than ever on phones, gaming, and social media. While these technologies aren’t going anywhere, childhood still needs the same things it always has: play, connection, creativity, and real-world experiences.

Time Away From Screens Makes Room For

  • Creativity that can’t be prompted or auto-generated
  • Outdoor play that builds bodies and brains
  • Deeper family connection that promotes mental well-being
  • Stronger communication skills that serve our kids in adulthood
  • Healthier habits formed early and carried for life
  • Real-life confidence that no follower count can’t replace

Small changes can make a big difference, and this partnership gives

South Carolina families the tools they need to start.

Make This Summer Count

Every summer feels long until you realize how

few are left before childhood ends.

You can let this be another summer that slips by, or you can make it the summer that changes everything.

The kids who grow into confident, capable, connected adults didn’t get there by accident. They got there because someone gave them real experiences over easy entertainment. Time outside over time online. Conversations over content. That’s what this summer can be for your family.

More Real Life. More Connection. More Childhood.
