    love love love!

Our kids generally don’t do a ton of screen time because when they were little and we did literally any amount of time with them it left them either whiny, aggressive, or melting down afterwards. Years later I learned about the brain science stuff that happens when kids are on interactive screens so we intentionally focused on in-person and off line activities. They are now 9 and 6. I read this with my oldest and she LOVED it! I was planning to read a section a day, but she insisted we keep reading and finished the whole thing the first night! It explains so well WHY kids react the way they do to screens and pumps them up to build their best brain with off screen activities. My daughter especially loved the analogy of dopamine being like pancake syrup – too little and your pancake isn’t rewarding, too much and it’s a huge mess! There is so much brain science at work when kids are on screens, and this explains things perfectly for upper elementary kiddos. Highly recommend for families, especially those with 3rd and 4th graders. So helpful for both parents and kids!

Super cool and informative read for kids (and adults)!

This book is an absolute gem! It is colourful, engaging, and presented in a fun comic style that makes it super easy for kids to relate to. The idea of turning the message into a superhero mission is brilliant – my nephews were completely hooked from the first page! It even gave us adults a few a-ha moments too, helping us understand why the kids act the way they do on screens – making it an informative read for all of us!

A MUST PURCHASE for Parents with young kids

Parents, this is a MUST purchase book for your young kids! This helps set the stage for healthy digital habits and healthy brain development. As a psychologist and family coach, I highly recommend this book. It reframes the digital captivation into a brain mega-drain, which is what early tech really is for our kids’ developing brains. If you want to help your kids build a healthy relationship with technology and you, purchase and read this book with your kiddos.

An Excellent Book for the Entire Family!

This book is a must-read for any parent, grandparent, and elementary school-aged child. I admit that I am a bit biased, since I have the utmost respect for author Melanie Hempe’s abilities as a health care professional, writer, speaker, podcaster, and ScreenStrong founder. (I am also chair of her ScreenStrong Board!) This book has been endorsed by key influencers. Melanie has gone to great pains to organize this book effectively. The design by Anna Wight is beautiful and captivating. The content is clear, clean, concise, concrete, and compelling — chock-full of valuable information from a Registered Nurse who is clearly an expert on this topic; in fact, parents and grandparents will learn a great deal by reading this book to and/or with grand/children. The content is very understandable for the target audience. Wonderful discussion questions close each section of the book. Melanie offers creative and enjoyable activities as alternatives to choices which could lead children to negative effects. She includes excellent suggestions for boundaries with technology use. Melanie closes the book with a wonderful re-cap, glossary, and opportunities to obtain additional ScreenStrong resources (screenstrong.org). In a culture currently ablaze with talk about the dangers of the Internet, social media, and gaming, you will definitely want to add this book to your library!

What a great resource for teachers and homeschool parents!

This book definitely covers the necessary topic about the negative effect of screens while also engaging the reader with creative illustrations. There are plenty of books on the market for adults about this issue but its refreshing to see a book that is for kids and teenagers.
    Such a great tool!

A most valuable resource for preventing screen addiction.

Beautiful clear simplicity. I wish this book had been available when my child was younger! It would have saved me so much confusion and would have saved my son from having been exposed to screens too soon. Thank you for this resource. Preventing screen addiction must start in early childhood!!

A MUST HAVE for all families who supply devices to their children

If you have kids who are on devices, this book is a must! It is filled with the latest scientific information about the harm those devices are causing your child. Melanie Hempe, along with the fabulous Screen Strong team, has created a book that you must read with your child.
Many parents struggle to find alternatives to replace their devices. Melanie and her team give great suggestions as to what to do (boredom is good!!).

A Librarian’s Top Pick for Elementary Students

A delicate blend of whimsical illustrations and science-based evidence written in kid-friendly language. For those who are ready to hear it, this would be a great book to share with the family at home, or as a read aloud with elementary school students. As an early elementary public school librarian(K-2), I already teach my students many of these concepts but I can use parts of the book to better illustrate and explain the parts that are most relevant. And although kids’ brains are most susceptible to being hijacked by screens, adults have similar problems as screen technology is designed to hijack all of our brains!!

This is what parents of young children need to help prevent screen problems in their house

Prevention is much better than treatment of an actual problem. This is true in all parts of life — medicine, any addiction, etc. This book carries that much-needed prevention message when it comes to kids and screen usage, to equip parents to have the screen conversation BEFORE it becomes a huge problem in the household… at ages 7-10.

The book is perfectly geared with artwork and stories for younger kids. With smartphones becoming a part of the average American child’s elementary school life now, this book is what parents have been searching for to help them combat the deluge of societal and cultural pressure to spring for the smartphone. Thank you, Melanie and ScreenStrong for this book!

A must read in the age of technology!

The Adventures of Super Brain is a beautifully illustrated book that is easy for 3rd graders to relate to and teaches children the importance of limiting screen time. The book gives fun activities that children can engage in that strengthens brain power (going outside, playing an instrument, etc.) I would highly recommend this book to anyone with elementary school kids!

A great resource for parents navigating through a screen filled world

The Adventures of Super Brain explains the challenges and dangers related to screen use in an age-appropriate way to the targeted audience, 3rd and 4th graders (7- to 10-year-olds).
The topics are taught in an entertaining and informative way. Through the adventures of the main character, Super Brain, the reader learns about brain development and about all the amazing things the brain can do. The adventure continues with the introduction of a sneaky villain, MegaDrain, who weakens Super Brain. MegaDrain sneaks in and tries to steal the attention of Super Brain by pulling him away from healthy, good activities with friends and family and keeping him engaged in activities that are not healthy for him.

The book is full of amazing graphics and clever, catchy rhymes that will help children remember key points of the book.
As a grandmother of 8, I highly recommend The Adventures of Super Brain. It will be a great resource to begin and continue conversations with children about why screen use is harmful to them and why staying involved in real life activities is key to being healthy and happy.

    One of a Kind book!

This book is truly one of a kind! It’s entertaining and will captivate your elementary learner on the development of their brain and the effects of too much screen time. Parents will find it informative and interesting too. We all know that screens have taken over our lives, especially the lives of our children. They have stolen our kid’s valuable childhood years. This book will give you the information you need to change your outlook on the use of screens in your home. I highly recommend this book for families of elementary aged kids. The artwork is amazing too!

    A must-read!

As a college professor, I see the effects of too much screen time on my students. If they had had this resource as 3rd graders, things could be different. It’s becoming common knowledge that screen time is bad for our children and this book explains in an easy to understand way exactly why. Super Brain can save our children!

Must have book for school age kids!

My daughter (age 10) loves this book! It reinforces so many conversations we have had about the brain and screen use. It was very affirming for her to read. This is a must-have book for school age kids.

How to help elementary children navigate our digital world

This book is super interesting, easy to understand and holds your kids attention! Thank you again Melanie Hempe for giving parents help and honest guidance on how to speak to our children about what our digital environment is doing to their brains.

    Kids loved it!

I wish I could buy this book for every family! Read it with my kids 6 and 10 and they both loved it. I found it super engaging as well. I haven’t seen a book that comes close to this as far as connecting with younger kids on a topic that is so deeply intertwined in there lives, but somehow never discussed.

Kids need this book! So do parents.

This thoughtful book, written for children, fills an unmet need in the marketplace. Kids need information about how their brains work and how screentime affects them. This information will make it easier for them to say “no” to too much screentime. By giving kids the information that they will find funny and interesting, it makes it so much easier for parents who are trying to do the right thing by limiting screentime.

    Fantastic Resource

What a fun way to explain the impact of screens on children’s brains. As a counselor, I spend a lot of time trying to explain dopamine to parents and families. Screens are in every home, and it is crucial that we understand how to manage them as parents. I love how the brain appears on each page, giving children a fun thing to look for. The illustrations are excellent, and the message is spot on. I love that it also gives practical suggestions for families on how to replace screen time. I will be putting this on my shelf to share as a valuable resource. Thank you Screen Strong!

    Fun and informative read

I’m a parent of three and this was a fun, easy read that had lots of good information about the benefits of not getting sucked into screen time. In a world where there is so much emphasis on staying “connected” and utilizing technology in every possible way, this had several good reminders about the benefit of in-person connections. A good reminder for kids and adults alike!

Clear, Hopeful, Joyful, Life-Changing, and Fun!

This book is amazing. May be the best thing Hempe has done yet, and that’s saying a lot. It truly warms my heart to tears. How many kids and parents need it! So filled with hope, joy, wisdom. The poetry, the illustrations, the content so precisely worded but fun and helpful. It’s really awesome.
