Let’s be honest: when you say “family movie night” to your teen, expect an eye-roll so dramatic it could register on the Richter scale. But here’s the thing—they still show up. And that’s a win in the parenting playbook.
Watching movies together as a family isn’t just about screen entertainment—it’s about strengthening your family culture. It’s where memories are made, quotes become inside jokes (“Houston, we have a problem…”), and conversations happen that might not otherwise get off the ground. It’s a way to bond, to laugh, to cry, and sometimes to sneak in a life lesson or two, without the dreaded lecture.
Movies are a powerful tool, especially for teens who sometimes prefer their bedroom cave over hanging out with mom and dad. When tension is high, moods are low, or your relationship could use a boost, the right movie can open doors. Whether it’s humor, heart, or a little heroism, a great film can provide just the shift you need to reconnect.
The best part? It’s a built-in, device-free experience. In fact, the magic only happens when personal screens are off and out of sight. Movie night becomes a mini event—a popcorn-popping, blanket-fort-building, everyone-piled-on-the-couch kind of tradition. You might even rearrange the furniture and call it “going to the movies… at home.” And yes, cozy totally counts.
And no, saying NO to video games and social media doesn’t mean saying no to all screen entertainment. The difference? Movie watching is a passive activity, not an interactive one, meaning your child is not interacting with the screen; he is likely interacting with you while everyone enjoys the story. Unlike video games, smartphones, or YouTube, a movie actually has a natural ending, providing a clear stopping point. That’s the beauty of this kind of screen time: it brings your family together instead of driving everyone into their own little screen worlds.
We don’t recommend watching a family movie every night or making movies the sole focus of your intentional family time, but they absolutely have value. When you share a moving story (The Ultimate Gift), clever humor (Shrek), corny humor (Ghostbusters), or something that defies categories altogether (Napoleon Dynamite), your family builds a shared memory bank. Movies create a library of one-liners and inside jokes that come in handy, especially when life isn’t going quite as planned. Don’t let the eye-rolls get in your way—it’s all part of the experience.
If you pop the popcorn, they will come… and that’s all I have to say about that!
